Best practices on science communication

Outline:

  • It will be for a total of 3 hours. This includes 2 sessions (1 hr 20 mins each) + 20 minute break.
  • In the first session, we will include three basic ideas in science communication: (a) Know your audience (b) Maximize signal/minimize noise (c) Effective storytelling.
  • The second session will be designed based on the responses to the survey.
  • The workshop will be interactive. While we will introduce ideas and best practices, participants will have to interact with each other through several activities that are built into this workshop.
Speakers:

Simar Mattewal

Simar is a PhD student in Chemical Engineering at MIT and a fellow of the MIT Communication Lab. She is passionate about reaching out to the wider public through science communication and effectively using visuals in presentations. As a fellow of the MIT Communication Lab, she also enjoys mentoring fellow graduate students and postdocs on best practices of science communication through one-on-one sessions and by conducting workshops. She also conducts research on sustainable technologies and is currently working on carbon based membranes for separations; studying nanoporous graphene membranes and polymeric carbon molecular sieves. She did her undergrad from IIT Delhi. Outside of research, she loves to go for long walks, with her camera ready to capture all colors of nature. She also enjoys exploring new brunch places, taking guided tours of historical sites, and on quieter days, enjoying the company of a book.

Pradeep Natarajan

Pradeep completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering from MIT, where he was also a fellow of both the Communication Lab and the Teaching+Learning Lab. He deeply cares about teaching the craft of science communication to students and has conducted more than 20 workshops related to this at MIT. He is currently working at a Biotech startup in Boston developing technologies at the intersection of AI and healthcare. Before moving to the U.S. for graduate studies, he obtained a Dual Degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras. Outside research, Pradeep loves to play tennis and cricket, experiment with cooking and baking new dishes, and reading books on popular science or history with a cup of hot chai.
